Here's an interesting curiosity from the British Film Institute. It's an instructional video about tea from nearly 70 years ago.

It really should go without saying, but if you're going to try this one at home, exercise a great deal of caution.

Alexander McCall Smith and George Orwell Talk Tea

Here's another article I recently wrote for The English Tea Store blog.

Alexander McCall Smith and George Orwell Talk Tea
By William I. Lengeman III

One of the many things I’ve discovered in the years I’ve been writing about tea is that the British have strong opinions when it comes to this topic. In 1946, just three years before writing his most famous work (1984), British author George Orwell set forth some of his strong opinions on tea in A Nice Cup of Tea, an essay that’s still much quoted to this day. More about that one in my previous article.

I’m not sure exactly what qualifies as British, but given that author Alexander McCall Smith was born in a British colony in Africa and how resides in Scotland, I guess it puts him in the same ballpark. Smith, who was born two years after...

World's Largest Sweet Tea

Chick-fil-A Sets Guinness World Record With World's Largest Sweet Tea
(from a press release)

On Wednesday, Aug. 4, Tulsa-area Chick-fil-A restaurants set a Guinness World Record by creating the world's largest sweet iced tea. A nine-foot tall cup held more than 1,140 gallons of freshly brewed sweet tea and ice. The record was set during an all-day celebration at Nienhuis Park in Broken Arrow, Okla.

Operators and team members from five Chick-fil-A restaurants worked with volunteers from schools, churches and community groups throughout the Tulsa area to create the record-setting drink. The process required 72 pounds of tea leaves, 1,150 pounds of sugar, one ton of ice and 912 gallons of water.

Official Guinness World Records adjudicator Kimberly Partrick presided over the event and officially called the record. The achievement marks the second Guinness World Record for Tulsa Chick-fil-A Operator Arthur Greeno, who set the record for world's largest soft drink when he created an 834-gallon cup of freshly-squeezed Chick-fil-A lemonade in 2008.

Tea Tourism Revisited

Here's another article I recently wrote for The English Tea Store blog.

Tea Tourism Revisited
By William I. Lengeman III

I’m pretty sure there are no statistics available on the topic, but I’d be willing to bet that tea tourism doesn’t quite stack up against other types of specialty tourism – at least not yet. To quote one of the authors of a recent article on tea tourism in India, as mentioned below, “It’s not a particularly well-organized pocket of the industry, but more tea estates, also called gardens, are opening their properties to guests interested not only in their product and how it comes to be, but in the unique world of tea planters, the ‘burra sahibs,’ and their domain.”

For some previous articles on the topic at this site take a look at our Esteemed Editor’s take on being a...

The Levels of Tea Experience

Here's another article I recently wrote for The English Tea Store blog.

The Levels of Tea Experience
By William I. Lengeman III

All due respect and perhaps apologies are due to William James, who wrote an influential book just over a century ago, called The Varieties of Religious Experience. You can approach tea from many different directions and there’s hardly one true and proper path. But like most things in life, you typically have to start at the bottom and work your way up through the ranks.

Novice - Most tea drinkers start here, although if you grow up in one of those countries where tea is integral to the culture, you’ve already got a leg up on most of us. Growing up in a suburban middle-class American home, my notion of tea was this weird powdery stuff that you scooped from a big jar and added to water. Is it any wonder...
