Elvis Presley & Other Stars Plug Iced Tea

Here's a clip of Elvis Presley pushing tea. Say what you want about the product but you won't often see the King, James Brown, Willie Nelson and Coolio "performing" together.

19th Century Tea Patents

Here's another article I recently wrote for The English Tea Store blog.

19th Century Tea Patents
By William I. Lengeman III

I’ve been writing about tea gadgets at this fine site for a while now, and not so long ago I began writing a regular monthly feature on the topic – with a side of offbeat tea-related news tossed in for good measure. Yes, I do run across enough tea gadgets in a month’s time to allow me to write a regular column. That’s a lot of gadgets.

Which is nothing new, really. As I wrote in an earlier article, one of the first tea-related patents in the United States was for a device with a rather fancy name but that was essentially just a teapot. But as I skimmed through the patent office files for tea stuff patented prior to 1900, it became apparent that the problem of what to do with tea leaves was one of the main issues inventors of the day...

Animated Punjana Tea Commercial

Despite what the name might suggest, Punjana is not an Indian tea company, but rather is based in Ireland. More about them here. A tip of the hat to teadog.com, where I first ran across this one.

Does Your Tea Site Need A Makeover?

Here's another article I recently wrote for The English Tea Store blog.

Does Your Tea Site Need A Makeover? By William I. Lengeman III

Back in the 70s I had some pretty fine bell bottoms, if I do say so myself, and some eye-catching silk shirts and a nice pair of platform shoes to round out any ensemble. I know fashions have a way of coming around and I don’t have any of those snappy duds anymore but even if I did I wouldn’t wear them. I’m not obsessed with my appearance but I still don’t want to be seen in public in clothes that are so outdated.

Which is to suggest that appearances do count for something. If you disagree, stop and think about what you wore to your last job interview. All of which occurred to me when I came across a tea site recently that would have been considered...

Tea Partay - Smirnoff Raw Tea

From a few years back, here's a viral video Smirnoff put together to promote a tea-flavored beverage. Judging from the fact that it generated more than six million hits, one must assume that it achieved its goal of drawing attention to the product.

Smoke Gets in Your Tea

Here's another article I recently wrote for The English Tea Store blog.

Smoke Gets in Your Tea
By William I. Lengeman III

I don’t have a problem with smoke flavoring in foods. It seems like a sensible idea, although given that I don’t eat meat anymore I’m probably not able to take full advantage of it. When it comes to tea, however, it’s a different story.

I’ve been drinking tea for more than seven years now, and in the early days I approached almost everything with an open mind. As time passed it became increasingly apparent that I didn’t like any...

Mini-Documentary - Offbeat Tea Parlour

Here's a brief but interesting documentary, of sorts, from the Art of Work series. Creator Richard Finn Gregory describes it thusly, "The Art of Work is a series of tiny documentaries about people who have found a way of making their work a happy, satisfying part of their lives."

The subject this time around is Jess, the Tea Lady, from South Africa, who presides over Lady Bonin's Tea Parlour, one of the more offbeat tea rooms I've seen.

Some Quirky Teahouses

Here's another article I recently wrote for The English Tea Store blog.

Some Quirky Teahouses
By William I. Lengeman III

Oh, the teahouse. According to one informed source, the number of tea houses here in these good old United States alone is somewhere around three thousand, a huge jump from a modest number about a decade and a half ago. Worldwide, there’s no telling how many tea houses there but “a whole bunch” or “more than you can shake a stick at” are probably not far off the mark.

With all the tea houses out there already and more coming to life every day it’s not surprising that some of them would fall into the offbeat category. We took a look at some of these a few months back and earlier this year we considered tea houses run by exalted rock and roll personages as...
